Stone and Water

If you pick up a stone to put in your mouth
and your fingers with a mind of their own
fly apart and the stone is lost to you
in folds of illusions you never considered

do not fret for death is a stone
disguised as a river you can drink from
or a glass you must hold to drown
both the unreal and death itself

all will be liquid when you taste the stones
ripped from your hands as if thrown away
and all that dissolves nourishes your career
which you’ve built out of stone and water
